• Distribution: Central S. Africa
• Size: 3' - 4'
• Natural Habitat: Inhabits the desert scrubland habitats in Central South Africa. The adults
require quite large enclosures of at least 72" x 24" x 24" when kept in captivity.
• Behavior: Most will become tame with regular handling. Likes dark areas available for hiding.
• Captive Environment: Use full spectrum lighting 12-14 hours per day. Provide a basking area with
access to a cooler zone. Provide several climbing areas on branches, logs, & plants.
• Temperature: Day temperature should be gradient from 80 to 95 degrees F. Maintain night
temperature range between 65-72 degrees F.
• Humidity: This species requires only low levels of humidity.
• Water Requirements: Use only a small water bowl for drinking. Ventilate habitat well.
• Nutritional Requirements: This carnivore will accept quality dog or cat food & eggs. Feed
appropriate sized rodents (mice, hamsters, rats). Always offer variety for proper nutrition. Eats
variety of larger worms (earthworms, meal/wax worms). Dust food with calcium and vitamins.
