Snake breeding varies a little between different species but there are some basic precautions you should take a look at to make sure your snake is healthy, both before and after breeding.
● Preparing to Breed: To prepare your pet snake for breeding, be sure to give it the proper amount of heat. Snakes are generally content with temperatures of 85° to 100° Fahrenheit. Also, try to refrain from handling your snake after feeding it, as this may cause them to regurgitate their meals.
● Build a Hibernation Chamber: Hibernation can be a key element for successfully breeding snakes, depending on the type you have. You’ll want to provide your snake with the seclusion of a hibernation chamber. To make one, find a box just a little bit smaller than your snake’s cage. Fill it with five to ten inches of corncob bedding, or another type of similar bedding. Your snake will burrow in this. You’ll also want to make sure you maintain an even temperature of 55° to 60° Fahrenheit in this chamber.
● Hibernation: To prepare your snake for hibernation, evaluate your female’s health with the help of your snake’s veterinarian. You should give your snake warm baths every day the week prior to hibernation. This will help remove wastes from your snake’s body. It’s a good idea to lower the temperature slowly in your snake’s cage. Lower the temperature of the bath water a few degrees every day until it’s the same temperature as the hibernation chamber. Introduce your snake to the hibernation chamber and make sure to add a bowl of water as well. Leave your snake there for eight weeks and replenish the water as needed. Begin to increase the temperature of the hibernation chamber after eight weeks until it reaches the normal temperature of the living quarters. After this, you can return the snake to its regular cage.
● Introducing the Two: You now want to introduce your female to the male’s cage. Measure her willingness to breed by reading her body language. If she lies down and looks relaxed near the male, she is ready. Reintroduce your snakes for a few days in succession until the female looks like she has lost interest in the male. She will be producing eggs at this point. After this, all you have to do is wait for her to lay eggs or birth live babies. The gestation period is generally 28 to 45 days.
Though there may be a few steps, some of which take time, chances are you will have some offspring to either sell or raise yourself!
